Government Crackdown on Marijuana in the Netherlands: Amsterdam's War on Weed

The Netherlands — and in particular its capital, Amsterdam — has long been thought to have some of the world’s most liberal marijuana policies. But today, the country’s government is clamping down on the weed industry. Police are raiding growers far more often, authorities are requiring “weed passes” to discourage marijuana tourism, and unprecedented numbers of so-called “coffeeshops” — where the sale of small amounts of marijuana is tolerated — are being forced to shut down.

VICE News visited Amsterdam to see what effects the new restrictions are having. After speaking to coffeeshop owners — one of whom has to close his shop because he’s technically too close to a school — we went to a weed festival and visited the home and greenhouse of Doede de Jong, one of the country’s few outspoken growers.

  1. Legalisation of marijuana would also lead to a decline in alcohol consumption because people will start using marijuana as a substitute. It is less dangerous than alcohol.

  2. "Very unhealthy" unlike the free flowing alcohol that they seem to have no problem serving to minors across Europe.

  3. ???its 2017 now and i assure you. The weed business is still going amazingly well mate. Im dutch btw, i know.

  4. I just got back from dam, and I am shocked at how bad the coffee shop sector is suffering. Most shops are closing and weed is stupid expensive

  5. now 2018
The new government will allow legal weed to be distributed in a number of municipalities. The government cannabis is cultivated nationally and then distributed among six to ten municipalities. It is a test to see whether legal cultivation decreases crime and the weed can contain fewer harmful substances.

  6. Weird.. I have been in Amsterdam some months ago and cannabis was everywhere, including made ice cream and cookies.

  7. Alot of crackheads in the comments section i see XD. If weed so damn good for everyone why don't pilots and surgeons do it on the job.
