The topic of decriminalisation of marijuana is being debated in the 16th National Youth Parliament.
The Motion for Debate brought by Leader of the Opposition, Maya London, called on the Government to amend all the requisite legislation to decriminalise the possession of small amounts of marijuana for medicinal or recreational use.
Ms. London raised the point of overcrowding in the prison system as well as the burden on taxpayers as a major strain on this country’s economy.
In her contribution, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Shekinah Lambkin, blamed the judicial system for the backlog. She said while many would compare other Caribbean countries, the culture of Trinidad and Tobago is different.
