Can marijuana help treat your anxiety?

In an article published on NPR.org, new research is being conducted on the use of the cannabis extract cannabidiol, also known as CBD.

As cannabis becomes legal in more and more states, it is being marketed as a way to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including anxiety.

It appeals primarily to people who want to utilize the positive effects of marijuana without getting high. And CBD does NOT contain THC, the psychoactive compound that gives people the feeling of being high.

But is there proof that it actually helps relieve anxiety?

According to the source, “…evidence of the substance’s anti-anxiety effect comes from animal research and from very small, short-term human studies that suggest CBD exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties.”

This was enough to spark the interest of Dr. Esther Blessing, a psychiatrist and researcher at New York University, who says, “I think there’s good evidence to suggest that CBD could be an effective treatment of anxiety and addiction.”

Clinical trials will look at those suffering from anxiety and PTSD to see if this non-psychoactive alternative is effective in treating these conditions.

Blessings explains, “Drugs can be non-psychoactive and still have an effect on the brain,” Blessing says. “CBD does have an effect on the brain, but it seems to affect the brain in possibly medicinal ways.”

Although years away from the results of these trials, there is no sign the the roughly 0 million CBD industry is slowing down anytime soon.

So, would you or have you taken CBD? What did you think? Let us know in the comment section below.
